New Commissioned Art

Here’s the full reveal for a commission titled “Familiar Voices Betwixt Dreams And Reality”. This one was created digitally and printed out as a 24”x30” archival giclée print on 90 lb cold press paper. Jessa and Joe , who have bought work of mine in the past, asked me to create a fantasy theme of my choosing that included them and their 5 pets. We came to the conclusion that it would be best to depict the pets personalities and some physical traits in the fantasy creatures I create instead of showing them as dogs or cats. One of Jessa’s favorite watercolor and ink pieces of mine is a magical forest scene titled “the Alliance Came Unlooked For” so I decided to make the art a forest scene with Jessa in a hood like the enchantress in “Alliance”. I’ve been wanting to paint another centaur for awhile now and thought Joe would look great as one and tie everything together nicely.

When it came to titling the piece we worked together on coming up with a title that told the story as well as being personal to them and so “Familiar Voices Betwixt Dreams And Reality” was born!

While nearing the final lap for completing the painting I ran into a major setback that almost gave me a heart attack! The Photoshop file for this was massive with countless layers and 500dpi. It was 4.5 gigs closed and much larger when opened. This caused my Mac to freak and not be able to save any files including that one. I had to call Apple and we ended up running a bunch of diagnostics and ended up reinstalling the OS Catalina which did the trick and got everything back to normal. Whew!

Illustratively yours,

-Fian

I had such a fun and amazing creative journey with this one (minus the tech meltdown) and am grateful and honored to have been able to create something so personal for them. Thanx so much Jessa and Joe!

A revise in the making?

March 13, 2021

Since “Inner Cerebral Busker” was originally created for a specific purpose and can’t be sold as prints as is, I’m thinking about changing the background and releasing a revision of it.

What do you think?

I know I previously posted here about "When Gods Collide", which I did for H-Streetskateboards back in the fall, but I wanted to post this bit of news about it. I posted it recently on my FB page but totally brain farted and forgot to post it here. It was selected in the “Society Of Illustrators of Los Angeles” show, as well as the fantasy awards book “Infected By Art” volume 9. I am honored and immensely grateful to the judges for including my work to be included with such amazing and talented artists.

What a great way to start off 2021!!!

"When Gods Collide" New Art Print

December 03, 2020 in store
Fian Arroyo_dragons_Tengu_fantasy_print_2.jpg

“When Gods Collide” was originally commissioned by @hstreetskateboards as a skateboard design for their Japanese rider @yuro_nagahara. I accepted the assignment because I knew it would be a wonderful opportunity to create an image that would not only be great for a skateboard deck but also as a personal piece for myself. I was excited about working on this because growing up, I lived in Japan for a few years and the Japanese sense of art, design and the culture has always made a big impression in my life and art. The folklore imagery from that country has always captured my imagination especially their Tengu and dragons. The tengu were originally pictured with beaks taking the forms of birds of prey, depicted with both human and avian characteristics. But this feature has often been humanized as an unnaturally long nose, which has become today the tengu's defining characteristic in the popular imagination.

Japanese dragons, like most East Asian dragons, are water deities associated with rainfall and bodies of water. Their fearsome appearance are typically depicted as large, wingless, serpentine creatures with clawed feet. Taking the characteristics of both legendary creatures into account, I thought it would be a great composition to have a divine massive clash between gods of air and sea. In keeping with the folklore vibe, I incorporated a symbol of classic Japanese art into the composition by including into the piece an interpretation of “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa”, by the classic Japanese artist Hokusai Katsushika 1760 – 1849.

“When Gods Collide” is a digital painting offered as an 8”x20” signed and titled open edition, archival, giclée print. It is professionally printed by @hencoreprographics in Asheville, NC on Epson Cold Press Natural 19mil acid free, 100% cotton rag, archival using Epson UltraChrome K3 Inks. It is available in my shop, just click HERE.
